Community Capacity

Community capacity refers to the capabilities that exist within communities and within the networks between individuals, communities and institutions of civil society that strengthen individual and community capacity to define their own values and priorities and capacity to act on these. Community capacity has a number of dimensions and these include:

  • Physical resources - assets such as buildings, community meeting halls and places
  • Human resources - the skills, knowledge and abilities of people who live and work in the community
  • Social resources - that is the networks within the community and the networks between individuals and civil society that profoundly affect the quality of life in community
